Devashish Salpekar, Ph.D., is a Senior Battery Research Scientist at UL Research Institutes’ Electrochemical Safety Research Institute (ESRI) in Houston, Texas. He earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science and NanoEngineering from Rice University under the supervision of Prof. Pulickel M. Ajayan, where he investigated electrode and electrolyte materials for high-temperature lithium-ion batteries. He subsequently joined Argonne National Laboratory as a postdoctoral researcher, studying silicon-anode durability, battery aging mechanisms, and extreme fast charging of graphite-based lithium-ion batteries. His research integrates electrochemical diagnostics, advanced materials characterization, and mechanistic analysis to understand degradation, failure, and safety limits in energy storage systems. His expertise spans silicon-anode technologies, fast charging, SEI formation and evolution, battery aging, and thermal runaway behavior in lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. He has contributed to multiple U.S. Department of Energy-funded research programs, including the Silicon Consortium Project, and has collaborated with national laboratories, universities, and industry partners. He has authored more than 25 peer-reviewed publications. At UL Research Institutes, his work focuses on battery safety, degradation mechanisms, and failure analysis in commercial and next-generation lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, as well as laboratory-scale redox flow battery systems.
